Abstract
High altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPO) is an important cause of disability in those visiting the Himalayas. Many visitors and their doctors are apparently unaware of this serious and potentially lethal condition, though it can readily be prevented by ascending slowly and using acetazolamide. Early recognition of symptoms and signs with prompt treatment can lead to rapid recovery. A description is given of 40 cases seen over the past five years in the Sonam Norboo Memorial Hospital, Leh, North West India.
